Leeds Guild of Singers sing “By the waters of Babylon” today at 5pm. Tickets £8/£3, to include refreshements after the concert. From the LGS website:

Soulful songs of lament and resurgence:

Super Flumina – Philippe de Monte
Quomodo cantabimus – William Byrd
I Am The True Vine – Arvo Pärt
O suavitas et dulcedo – Philippe de Monte
Hymnum canentes martyrum – Graham Coatman
Salvator mundi, Domine – John Sheppard
Spring in Winter – John Woolrich
Ne iscaris – William Byrd
Love bade me welcome – Judith Weir
O Magnum Mysterium – William Byrd
A child’s prayer – James Macmillian
Ecce vicit leo – Peter Philips

A rich programme of soulful, sonorous and mostly sacred music in the Victorian High Gothic splendour of All Souls Church, Blackman Lane.

Central to this programme are two motets, one by Philippe de Monte, well travelled Renaissance composer, who visited England with the Spanish court in 1554 bringing his setting of Super flumina Babylonis, in the reign of Queen Mary. William Byrd struck up a friendship with him, and ten years, in the reign of Elizabeth I, when Catholics were under constant threat, responded with his own setting of words from Psalm 137 Quomodo cantabimus (How can we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?)

The sacred pieces in this programme explore this theme of faith under persecution, expressed in terms of laments over the fate of Jerusalem. Symbolically, this may stand for the position of all oppressed peoples. Against this the contemporary pieces express views on the hope of resurgence, the expectations that surround the birth of Christ, and new life in spring out of winter.

The event is part of the Treasures Revealed Leeds festival 2011: their website.

Info: 0113 2162674 or 07966 271811 or concerts@leedsguildofsingers.org.uk

Tickets: adult £8, students £3, under-16s free
available on the door or via the Box Office on 07966 271811 or via concerts@leedsguildofsingers.org.uk (will be available for collection on the door).

Access: The venue is accessible to those with mobility difficulties. Free parking is available adjacent to the Church.

This concert will be recorded (unobtrusively) as it is our dress rehearsal for a CD. It will be followed by a buffet supper put on by the parish.

A small group from All Souls’ has been working hard towards our involvement in Treasures Revealed in Leeds – 1st – 9th May 2010. www.treasuresrevealed.co.uk/discover-explore/leeds At All Souls’ we will be Open on Saturday 1st 10:00 – Noon and 14:00 – 16:00 with an invitiation to Come and Play the Organ (one of Isaac Abbot’s finest) with our organist, Keith Senior. Open for Worship on Sunday 2nd and 9th at 11:00 for the Sung Mass and at 14:00 for Worship by the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church; on May 2nd there will also be a Said Mass in French at 18:00. On Monday evening for the Said Mass at 19:30. On Wednesday morning for the Said Mass at 10:00, then open until Noon, and from 14:00 – 16:00. On Saturday at 17:00, Leeds Guild of Singers will perform the ’In a strange Land’ suite (Charge) followed by an All Souls’ Feast. Throughout the week a powerful new photographic exhibition of the church past and present will be on display. We have been helped by the West Yorkshire Archive Service and by Hannah Carey from Little London Arts. All Souls’ Church is a true hidden treasure – Sir George Gilbert Scott’s last church, a memorial to Walter Farquhar Hook, an Anglo-Catholic gem. Come and see us! and if you want to visit outside of this timetable, don’t hesitate to ring Rev’d Alice
