Heritage Open Days at All Souls’ (Hook Memorial) Church 8 – 11 September 2011

All Souls’ (Hook Memorial) church will be open to visitors on Thursday: 18:30 – 20:00; Friday: 10:00 – Noon & 14:00 – 16:00; Saturday: 10:00 – 13:00; Sunday: 10:00 – Noon & 14:00 – 16:00. On the Sunday, an Anglican Mass will take place from 11:00 – Noon; an Ethiopian Orthodox service of the Word will take place from 14:00 – 16:00 – visitors are very welcome during service times.

Treasures Revealed at All Souls’ (April 30th – May 8th) begins with a “Come and Play” the Isaac Abbott Organ from 10:00 – 12:00 and from 14:00 – 16:00. All visitors warmly welcomed, not just organists! At 12:30, Philip Tordoff will play a recital. Donations invited for the recital, admission and guide leaflets free. Please not the recital is at 12:30, and not at the time given on the Treasures Revealed in Leeds website.

Treasures Revealed – Wedding photos!

As part of Treasures Revealed 2011 (30th April-8th May) we plan to show a display of parish community wedding photos. You don’t have to have been married in All Souls’ or even in Leeds – we want to show the sheer range of the wedding experience of the Woodhouse/Blenheim/Little London/All Souls’ parish community. To avoid precious photographs being lost or damaged, church photographer Luke Walwyn will be in church on Thursday 14th April from 09:30 – Noon to re-photograph and return originals. If you’d like your photo shown but can’t manage that time, please let Rev’d Alice know on 0113 2162674 / vicar@allsoulsleeds.org.uk

“In a strange land”

On Saturday May 8th, the Leeds Guild of Singers perform “In a strange Land”, featuring songs by musical director Graham Coatman about arrivals and departures, strangeness and familiarity. The concert begins at 5pm and will be followed by multi-cultural food ~ at least West Indian, Ethiopian and Scottish guaranteed! Prices (tickets or at the door): £7 (waged); £3 (all concessions); £0 (accompanied children under 16). The Treasures Revealed” exhibition will also be on display. Please use the south porch entrance, opposite the vicarage. Ample, FREE car-parking.

The church will be open on Wednesday May 5th, 10:00 – Noon, and 14:00 – 16:00. Displays of All Souls’ past and present; transcription of the 1893 “Handbook to the buildings of the Hook Memorial” available. Architecture and artistry by George Gilbert Scott, John Oldrid Scott, R.J. Johnson, A. Crawford Hick, Skidmore, C.E. Kempe, Clayton and Bell, Emily Ford – and more. Defiinitely worth a look. Mass from 10:00 – 10:30 – all welcome.

Treasures Revealed – the discovery begins!

All Souls’ opens its doors today on Day #1 of Treasures Revealed in Leeds. From 10 – 12 and 2-4, organists are welcome to come and play the organ, described by Ouseley as the finest he’d played. The church is open to non-organists too: walk around and look at some of the best work of the best of their time: Gilbert Scott, Clayton and Bell, C. E. Kempe, Skidmore, Crawford Hick and, of course, Isaac Abbott. See too the display of All Souls’ Past, Present and Future by designer Luke Walwyn. Discover the Lost Streets of All Souls’ – whole communities cleared for road improvement schemes; and find out: just how does All Souls’ link red telephone boxes and Oscar Wilde?…

The ornate font-cover in the baptistry was painted by Emily Ford, a member of the congregation in the 1890s. Ms Ford (had the term ‘Ms’ been around in her day) was a member of a Quaker family, who were involved both in the Abolition of the Slave Trade and in Women’s Suffrage (votes for women). Her sister, Isabella O. Ford, was perhaps better known in the movement. The font-cover opens out into 8 panels, which are decorated, partly with members of the congregation (as figures from Scripture), partly with fellow campaigners for justice: Emelia Russell Gurney and Georgina Holme Sumner, to name but two. To name a third: Lady Mount Temple, whose name links All Souls’ to the Titanic, to Oscar Wilde and to ….. worth a visit.
